HDPERU is an indigenous film collective founded by filmmaker brothers Alvaro and Diego Sarmiento. We produce documentaries focused on the defense of native peoples’ rights and environmental conservation in the Andes and the Amazon of Peru.
In 2020, HDPERU won the Berlinale Talents Footprints - Mastercard Enablement Programme award, having Wim Wenders as president of the jury, with “The Seed Project”. Thanks to this prize, we will screen the film MOTHERS OF THE LAND at schools in rural communities in the Peruvian Andes.
MOTHERS OF THE LAND (2019), our second feature documentary premiered at the 69 Berlin Film Festival, United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues, Arte France TV and RAI Italia TV. The film is related to food security, resilience, inclusive economies, and women farmer’s adaptive capacities facing climate change difficulties in the Andes.
GREEN RIVER. THE TIME OF THE YAKURUNAS (2017) our feature debut premiered at the 67 Berlin Film Festival and the MoMA Doc Fortnight. The documentary is a poetic journey into the depths of the Amazon which explores the perception of time in three small villages.
Our films received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, MacDowell Colony, The Yaddo Corporation, Campus Latino - Documentary Campus, IBERMEDIA Script Development Fund and the Carolina Foundation Residency for screenwriters.
Our documentaries have been screened at the United Nations, the UNESCO, and museums such as the MoMA, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, American Museum of Natural History (USA), Akademie der Kunst, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Germany), Museo delle Culture (Italy), Casa de las Americas (Spain), Shanghai Long Museum (China), CCBB Sao Paulo (Brazil), among others. And academic events at NYU (USA), King's College London (England), Universiteit Leiden (The Netherlands), etc.
